2012 “Canelli” Moscato d'Asti DOCG Moscato d’Asti is one of the best known DOCG in Italy, and everyone loves this sweet and low alcohol (5.5%) sparkling wine around the world. However, like Champagne, Moscato d’Asti is dominated by the big commercial producers, making wines which devoid of character, ability to age, and terroir. There are in fact 58 commues for Moscato d'Asti around the Cuneo, Asti and Alessandria provinces, but the commue of Canelli is the most prestige one, and the first place which ancient Romans planted the grape Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains in Italy (believe to be before 1,300 AD). Vittorio BERA & Figli has been producing Moscato in Canelli since 1785, and remains independent, boutique and artisan eversince. BERA grows their own grapes, makes and bottles the wine in their own estate, to show the world how interesting Moscato can be. The wines do have a surprising age-ability, so do keep some in your cellar!
