Seiko does make some cheaper watches (and some very expensive ones) but focusing on either is a disservice to their history. Two watches that Seiko made from 1960 to 1975 are some of the most interesting: the Grand Seiko and the King Seiko. This first King Seiko released in 1963/4 (some said 1961) was fitted with a hand-wound movement but was an unnumbered, 25 jewel caliber. Unlike the Grand Seiko, the King Seiko did not read chronometer as it was not internally tested by Daini. The King Seiko was available in steel and gold plate like the Grand Seiko, but the lack of chronometer designation laid the groundwork for it being considered a 'lesser' Grand Seiko. It was during a visit to a Seiko stockist that Tanaka , the Grand Seiko designer, the father of Grand Seiko, realized how far Seiko was lagging behind in design; "As I looked in one of the showcases I saw many watches sparkling brilliantly. Then I looked on the other side and saw watches that had a rather uneven gleam; the difference was all too apparent. The brilliantly sparkling watches were Swiss and those with the duller finish were by Seiko". Tanaka knew a holistic approach to design was needed, where all departments worked in one motion towards a single design. In 1962 he developed a series of rules he called "the Grammar of Design" 1. All Surfaces and angles from the case, dial, hands and indices had to be flat and geometrically perfect to best reflect light 2. Bezels were to be simple two-dimensional faceted curves 3. No visual distortion was to be tolerated from any angle and all cases should be mirror finished 4. All cases must be unique for each reference with no generic round case designs A few years after the release of the original GS, the first generation King Seiko was produced. It was a hand-wound, unnumbered 25-jewel caliber. The first King Seiko never really made progress as the lack of chronometer rating gives an impression that it was a lesser model of the original GS. After the original KS, the King Seiko caliber 44A models were released which were housed in different variations of cases (more specifically, with various case back emblems). The 44 series were all hand-wound calibers for the KS line that beat at a normal 18,000 bph. It was thus inevitable that the KS would soon go the same route as the Lord Marvel and GS did, producing higher-frequency movements. The result was the creation of the King Seiko 45 series, a manual-wound movement with 25 jewels which beat at an astounding 36,000 bph or 10 bps, thus relegating the 44 series to what was now considered the low-beat calibers; the 45 was the new Hi-Beat caliber. What so special about our listing ?🤷🏻‍♂️ Over the years, the 44s and other Tanaka inspired Grand/King Seikos have suffered when they reach a watch repair bench. Independent watchmakers who received Grand/King Seikos to repair or service could not help but start up their polishing wheel. So the facets on the edge of the lugs, the contrasting matte and polished finish on the sides of the case and other small details vanished, like the subtle meaning of a Japanese haiku: lost in translation. Those who still have these original features untouched, like any unpolished vintage watch, are incredibly desirable among collectors. And this one has an unpolished sharp look on the watch case, which you can see from our listing and you are owning an original untouched King Seiko watch case. Hence it’s price reflected. If you like what are listing please make sure to follow us. We have other Rolex , Omega , Seiko vintage watches in other listing and will post various watches every week. :) ~sometime.sometimes
