History of G-Shock 💥 More than thirty years ago, Kikuo Ibe re-envisioned watches, engineering the unbreakable G-SHOCK – an idea famously inspired when he dropped and shattered a watch gifted to him by his father. MR-G was born 20 years ago - 1996’s Twenty years ago, he did it again, this time defying design assumptions to re-making his own creation in metal to suit a more professional, grown-up audience – and the MR-G line was born. The work came from another low point. After the success of G-SHOCK, Ibe’s designers needed a new project to inspire them as they spent their working hours designing lower-cost Casio models. Eight members of his team started a side project, outside of regular working hours – a predecessor to the “20 per cent time” technology firms gifted their more innovative staff to work on passion projects many years later. Metal G-Shock! A smarter dresser type but Tougher! After months of discussion and disagreement, but encouraged by Ibe’s mantra to “never give up”, the team uncovered its shared passion: creating an indestructible watch like the G-SHOCK, but built from metal rather than easy-to-work with plastic. The idea was welcomed enthusiastically by Casio, and evolved into the premium line of Ibe’s original line. “We had a lot of fans within the G-SHOCK market,” Ibe said via a translator. “As they get older, they needed a smarter, dressier type of watch. We want a G-SHOCK fan to be still a fan when they are a professional working environment.” Other watches made in metal are beautiful, Ibe said, pointing to Rolex, but like the watch his father gave him decades ago, they’re delicate. “What makes MR-G different from those brands would be toughness,” he explains, saying MR-G initially targeted the same “triple 1o” target of G-SHOCK, resisting a 10-metre shock and 10-bar underwater with a 10-year battery life. “It can be used in any severe environment.” Convention dictated that the G-SHOCK toughness simply couldn’t be replicated in metal. “G-SHOCK is easier to protect,” said Ibe. “The metal MR-G is a lot harder to protect.” G-SHOCK’s famous style is at the heart of its strength – the chunky design protects it from falls and keeps it ticking underwater – but that’s more easily achieved in chunky plastics than the hand-worked metals that make up the MR-G editions. Like its plastic predecessor, the MR-G uses separate parts and adds space between them to protect from shocks or impacts from a fall, while the bezel is a distinct component from the main watch case. Between them sits shock absorbing material to further cushion the pieces. MR-G is not simple! That informs the design, and the physical demands of protecting a MR-G watch gives it a more complicated aesthetic than rivals. “Generally, a metal watch is quite simple looking – but MR-G isn’t,” he added. “My difficulty was to make a metal surface look more beautiful.” That’s been achieved by the use of master craftsman known as “Takumi” making small batches of the watches by hand in Yamagata, Japan – and by continuing to innovate. The first design, the classic MRG-100 was released in 1996 in stainless steel and titanium, tough and light materials. In 2003, the MRG-2000 was coated in an amorphous carbon film – second in hardness only to diamonds – while future versions used new polishing techniques to achieve a radiant finish. In 2007, MR-G added rubber cushioning between components, followed seven years later by a soft silicon gel in the crown unit, all adding to the convention-defying combination of toughness and beauty. _________ If you like what are listing please make sure to follow us.
